http://rocketsurgeon.squarespace.com/music-20-directory/
A while back, I started this wiki with the goal of creating the ultimate Music 2.0 Directory. Unfortunately, it was pretty much a total bust. The community generated entries were poorly written/categorized, spam showed up regularly, and I did not have the bandwidth to play editor-in-chief. Lucky for the rest of us, Jadam Kahn (aka RocketSurgeon) has never been a fan of most wiki UIs - he says "they are confusing, have a terrible navigation schema, and are difficult to maintain, especially when open to the public (don’t get me wrong, they have their time and place and can be a very useful tool for certain situations)." So, to solve this dilema he created a new and improved Music 2.0 directory. The new directory uses a blog approach - each listing is essentially a blog entry. He feels this approach has many advantages that are apparent in the new directory including: * Listings can have multiple categories * Users can browse companies by category * User can browse companies alphabetically * You can subscribe to a RSS feed to keep track new entries. * Users can comment on each company * Users can rate each company * Editorial control over listings Take a look and let him know what you think.

We have just launched a new site that allows musicians to collaborate in private sessions. Unlike other collaboration sites that give just about anybody access to your hard work, we let you the control who has access. Musicians can also create auditions and submit demos.
Our servers are fast, reliable and capable of handling huge session tracks such as Pro Tools etc. Please come by and take a look, we look forward to your candid comments. |

There's a new community that's only about a week and a half old or so...really new! It's called BandPump. They're trying to shake up the stagnant local music scene. I love how you can search for emerging musicians in your home town or all over the world based on the genre you like. A+ website, I can't wait for it to take off...

I've created a template for each service. When you go to Add Page, select the template from the pull-down called "Company Template". It's got a table for basic info and pulls the blog feed for each.
Check out the pages for Pandora and MusicIP as examples. |

The humble beginnings of what may some day become the "Ultimate Music 2.0 Directory".
Paul Lamere over at Sun picked up on my post yesterday on "music 2.0" (http://globallistic.blogspot.com/2006/12/music-20-companies.html). I'm glad I'm not the only one that has trouble with that label, but he takes a good shot at getting more granular with it. What is a Music 2.0 site? Yeah, I don't really know what "Music 2.0" is supposed to mean either, but I've compiled a list of companies that I've come across the are doing something interesting with music online. Some are subscription services with APIs that make syndication easy, others are informational sites, a handful are social networks (some arguably not really music-centric), a few are search engines, and some are recommendation engines.... and at least a couple, I'm guessing, are probably not legal. I've taken Paul's categorizations and tweaked them a little bit: Music 2.0 sites fall into a number of camps: Music Services - places like iTunes and Rhapsody where you can purchase or subscribe to music Music Discovery - places that help you find music - these fall generally into 3 subcategories: Social - wisdom of the crowds sites like last.fm, iLike. Goombah and Qloud Content-based - recommendations based on the music content - Pandora, SoundFlavor, MusicIP Expert based - Music recommendations from people - music blogs, irateradio.com Music Experience Augmentation - sites to make your music listening experience more enjoyable - music dashboards like sleevenotez or Snapp Radio Playlist Sharing - this includes playlisting sites like MusicMobs, fiql and Webjay Music Metadata - add to the data surrounding the music - MusicBrainz, All Music Guide, Gracenote You will see that these are each a node in the navigation tree. The idea is to give each company that fits into that category, their own page. That page will contain information about the service, URLs, company info/bios, or whatever you guys want.

I've been posting these sites to my delicious, but haven't yet figured out the best way to import them. For those that want to help, they are:

This might be a good thing to do with Semantic Mediawiki, which has some aspects of a database. SMW does things like categories and tags really well, and you could even devise a simple form-based entry method. meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Semantic_MediaWiki
